The Evolution of Digital Tie-Dye: My Journey from Concept to Creation

In 2016, my journey into the world of digital tie-dye began with a stroke of inspiration. At the end of 2015 and early 2016, I had been freelancing with design clients and I had reached the point of burnout. I was chasing contract and freelance projects with 4-5 clients. It was exhausting! I was working on graphics for a food truck + a website build (I also design WordPress sites on the side, a children’s book project, designing logos with a property management company, and picking up various other design projects!

I didn’t know that there was another way to make money online, a very good friend of mine from San Diego had discovered Creative Market and inspired me to create a shop. The next 4 months after that I started my own shop, but I had no clue what to sell! I wanted to use some of my interests in creating tie-dye patterns and designs and started uploading them on my Society6 shop. Which by the way, for those of you who do follow my shop– Society6 has recently started charging artists for subscriptions. 🙄 oh my! After years of having a profile and selling work on there, I guess I’m done with that site. So many companies are now charging for subscriptions. (More on this in a later post) I recommend checking out my Redbubble shop instead.

As a Visual Development Artist, I had spent years honing my craft, painting characters and backgrounds in Photoshop with meticulous detail and precision. Little did I know, this background would serve as the perfect foundation for my foray into creating digital tie-dye patterns.

Drawing from my experience as a Visual Development Artist, I seamlessly transitioned into painting digital tie-dye shapes for Photoshop Brushes. Armed with an intimate understanding of color theory, composition, and brush techniques, I approached each stroke with a sense of purpose and artistry.

With each brush stroke, I infused my designs with a unique blend of creativity and craftsmanship, capturing the essence of traditional tie-dye in a digital format. The result was a collection of brushes that breathed new life into the age-old art form, offering artists a versatile toolset to unleash their creativity.

I uploaded my very first Digital tie-dye Photoshop Brush set on Creative Market on May 05, 2016. And I know that there were no other products online during the time that was creating the same thing. I had done so much research online to see if any other artist was creating them and there was none to be found.

I took this as an opportunity to start creating products in this niche, even Creative Market featured my first product on their blog!

Then I kept going until customers started sending me messages about different types of product suggestions to create and in 2018 I created a Shibori Photoshop Brush Set.

The YouTube video got the attention of Adobe Discover that would later commission me to design a set of Shibori brushes exclusively for their website here.

While many have attempted to replicate the digital tie-dye trend, they’ll never quite catch up to my level of skill and craft. I’ve been doing this for a long time! Each brush in my collection is a testament to years of dedication and passion for the art of painting in Photoshop. And while imitation may be flattering, there’s no substitute for genuine artistry and expertise.

As the digital tie-dye trend continues to evolve, I remain committed to pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation. With each new release, I strive to inspire artists to unleash their imagination and explore the endless possibilities of digital design.
